In 1978, Mike Merrick, who had been downsized from his banking job, and his wife Linda, bought the company. Merrick thought the business had potential because of its low overhead and minimal inventory requirements. After purchasing the company, the couple renamed it Fish Window Cleaning. The "Fish" comes from the Christian symbol Ichthys (from the Greek or ) "sign of the fish."Merrick differentiated the company from competition by providing his customers with uniformed professionals and regularly scheduled service at a competitive price. As the company grew, he purchased other window cleaning companies in the area and the company expanded through acquisitions.Based on growing demand and his success, Merrick realized there was a need for this service in other markets and the Fish Window Cleaning FRANCHISED system was begun in 1998.
