In 1892, 18 area businessmen leased 55 acres around Crystal Lake to create a private retreat for hunting and fishing. At that time, the only way to reach the club was via the L&N Railroad. As accessibility improved, Ryland became a place for families. Cottages were built, the clubhouse became the center of the family and Ryland grew, with golf and tennis becoming favored leisure activities. Today, Ryland covers 492 acres, which include four large lakes, that are enjoyed by its 86 member families.
