TKO Hawaii specializes in the traditional Shotokan style of karate. Shotokan training is usually divided into three parts: Kihon (basics), Kata (forms or patterns of moves), and Kumite (sparring). Techniques in kihon and kata are characterized by deep, long stances that provide stability, enable powerful movements, and strengthen the legs. At TKO Hawaii, students learn all of these and also Bunkai (self defense applications) as they advance in their training. Along with learning karate, students also develop good moral character, respect for themselves and others through the dojo kun (dojo precepts).A unique feature about TKO Hawaii is that we try as much as possible to work with the students one-on-one or in smaller groups. This allows them to perfect their techniques and understand the meaning of the movements. This adds to their ability to apply the movements in kumite and bunkai.
