I specialize in structural integration and therapeutic body work. Helping people make gains in function, movement and reducing pain energizes me. The further we get from being in our twenties, it seems we need to manage more and more (an aching back, a sore foot, a bad knee...) This can be a slippery slope. Making gains and learning what we can do to take care of ourselves helps. It is important for clients to be part of the process, no matter how good a session is, the outcome also depends on what the client does. One of my clients described how I work by saying that I start from a clinical perspective and then develop a pain map that helps me find the connections in the body. I talk to each new client to learn about them and their goals before starting work. I have found that most people do not know what techniques will help them. I have also found that I am not good at limiting my session to one technique. Instead I draw from all my skills to address the situation as best I can. People familiar with structural integration are concerned that it is painful. I feel that effective work needs to be within an individual's tolerance. Usually this is a "good hurt" and the thought is, ahh that's the spot. Listening to the tissue under my hands guides my work. I look for a softening of stuck spots. It feels a bit like standing in the sand at the edge of the ocean and a wave comes and scoops some sand from under your feet.
