Originally built by Tom Spain as a grocery/general store in the German section of Mt. Adams, it was shortly thereafter purchased by Barnhard Recklingloh, who added a small taproom. Recklingloh operated it until 1917, when it was purchased by George Lagemann, a butcher who was employed by Recklingloh. After a fire in 1947, which destroyed the second floor living quarters, the tap room became larger, the grocery smaller, and a deck was added to the back of the building ... overlooking the city. In 1985, the last of the Lagemann children retired, and the tavern is currently run by its 4th set of owners. Since then, the original deck was replaced, and the grocery replaced by a small kitchen.
