Although it opened in the fall of 2011, the Goorin Bros. hat shop in the West Village has the feel of a much older shop, one that might have existed in the 1930s during the heyday of the sophisticated hat. The store, which sells both men’s and women’s headwear, has a design that harkens back to an earlier time (there’s exposed brick, worn wooden floors, a leather chair, and early 20th century window lettering), which seems appropriate enough for a business that began in 1895, when the current owner’s great-grandfather sold his first hat off a horse cart in Pittsburgh. Dozens of different hat styles are represented, from ball caps and flatcaps to fedoras and troopers (the winter hats with foldable ear flaps), and the accommodating staff happily helps customers find the right size and style to fit their head. — Taylor Berman
