CBT is a short term, goal-orientated treatment that is highly effective in the treatment of anxiety disorders and depression. CBT usually consists of 8 to 12 sessions where a client learns how their irrational or dysfunctional thought patterns lead to negative feelings and behaviors. CBT is a collaborative form of treatment where the therapist helps the client identify their specific irrational thoughts and maladaptive behaviors and teach the client "tools" to restructure their thought patterns and decrease their maladaptive behaviors.
