Many patients have "treatment resistant" bipolar depression. This is why another modality used in this office is TMS - Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. This is an FDA approved treatment for depression, which entails having a powerful magnet deliver pulses to the left forehead for 4 seconds out of every 30 seconds. The treatment lasts about 40 minutes and is done daily for 4 to 6 weeks. It is a little uncomfortable, especially initially, but not really painful. It probably works like ECT does, but usually the only side effect is an occasional headache. The patient continues to go to work as usual.
