Founded in 1952 by Roger Bacon High School friends Bill Wersel and Stan Handorf, the Village Landscape Service Company focused on lawn maintenance and grass-cutting. When the owners moved to Springdale, Ohio on Sharon Road, the owners changed its name to Sharon Nursery Company in 1959 and added landscape installation to their expanding services. The prospering landscape/maintenance company soon outgrew its location. In 1963, Bill and Stan packed and moved to a 30-acre farm alongside I-71 in Maineville, OH. The nursery and garden store remain located there today. “At the time, our friends and family thought we were crazy buying a farm -- in the middle of nowhere -- for the purpose of opening a garden center,” joked Bill Wersel. Their wisdom however, soon proved their friends wrong.
