Why Amish Blatz? icon_sm Troyer’s Country Amish Blatz is a destination for anyone seeking the good old times. Here at the store you’ll find a wonderful deli like when we were kids. Upstairs is where the Amish furniture is displayed. We recently added a shabby chic wedding venue and a couple unique vacation rentals. cropped-TroyersSmall.pngSo what do Bonnie and Phil Troyer, owners of this fine establishment, have to do with the Amish? The Troyers and Yoders (Bonnie’s maiden name) are families with deep roots in Mennonite and Amish traditions. Phil and Bonnie are members of Asheville Mennonite Church, and one only needs to look back two generations to find their Amish roots. Both the Amish and Mennonites are Anabaptist Christians who are a pacifist people with a long history of farming and living off the land. While most Amish have shunned modern conveniences including electricity, motorized vehicles, and modern fashions in their peaceful rural existence, most Mennonites have integrated into general society. Mennonites still hold peaceful living and service to others in high esteem. Ask Phil and Bonnie about the Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS), Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), or other services and service opportunities offered by Mennonite Church USA. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA The Troyers have always admired the fine craftsmanship of Amish and Mennonite artisans, so they decided to open this “Blatz” (translated as “place” in Pennsylvania German) as an outlet for their work. (It has been with the English that mistook “Pennsylvania Deutch” (German) to say, “Pennsylvania Dutch”). They travel regularly to Amish communities in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kansas and Indiana to bring their quality products to you. Stop in for a cup of joe and a sweet treat. We have a coffee corner and porch seating. Take home a bag of Troyer’s house blend or a box of herbal tea. By request, we’ll grind freshly roasted peanuts or almonds while you shop. Take home some all-natural peanut or almond butter! Troyer’s Country Amish Blatz serves as a CSA pickup location several days a week for the local Fairview farm, Cane Creek Asparagus & Company.
